The Story of Peter Piper Pizza
How It Started
Anthony "Tony" Cavolo started Peter Piper Pizza in 1973. The very first Peter Piper restaurant opened in Glendale, Arizona. Today, there are over 120 restaurants across the United States and Mexico.
In 1995, Peter Piper Pizza bought another pizza company called Pistol Pete's Pizza. For many years, Peter Piper Pizza was an independent company. Then, in 1992, a company called The Venture West Group bought Peter Piper Inc. The company was sold again in 2007 to ACON Investments.
Changes in Ownership
In October 2014, Apollo Global Management bought Peter Piper Pizza. Apollo Global Management also owned CEC Entertainment, Inc., which is the company behind the Chuck E. Cheese restaurants.
In 2020, Peter Piper Pizza's parent company, CEC Entertainment, Inc., faced financial difficulties. This was due to the challenges many businesses experienced at that time. However, by December 2020, CEC Entertainment was under new ownership. It was then owned by its lenders, with Monarch Alternative Capital leading the group.
New Looks and New Ideas
In March 2014, Peter Piper Pizza changed its logo. The new design was created to appeal to parents from different generations.
The company has also tried new restaurant styles. In February 2022, a new type of Peter Piper Pizza opened in Phoenix, Arizona. It was called "Peter Piper Pizza Express." These locations are designed for take-out orders. They do not have dining rooms or arcades like the regular restaurants. A second Express location opened in Phoenix in June 2022. A third one opened in Tucson, Arizona between 2022 and 2023.
In March 2023, another new style called "Peter Piper Pizzeria" opened in Olathe, Kansas. This was a "fast-casual" version, meaning you could get your food quickly. A second location opened in Kansas City, Missouri in June 2023. However, both of these locations closed by June 2024. The Kansas City location was even changed into a Chuck E. Cheese restaurant.
