Peter Sherlock Wyse Jackson is an Irish botanist and environmentalist. He was born on June 7, 1955. He used to be the president of the Missouri Botanical Garden. He also held a special teaching position in botany at Washington University in St. Louis.
Early Life and Growing Up
Peter Wyse Jackson was born in Kilkenny, Ireland. His father, Robert Wyse Jackson, was a bishop. Peter grew up loving birds and plants. He spent his summer holidays in County Kerry, exploring nature. When he was in high school at St Columba's College, Dublin, he learned about how plants are classified and named.
Education and Early Career
Peter Wyse Jackson went to Trinity College Dublin. There, he earned several degrees in botany. He even got a PhD for his work on Irish plants, especially those in the cabbage family. In 1980, he became the curator of the college's botanical garden. A curator is like a manager who takes care of the plants and collections.
Working to Protect Plants
In 1987, Peter Wyse Jackson started working with the International Union for Conservation of Nature. This group helps protect nature around the world. He also helped create an organization called Botanic Gardens Conservation International. This group connects botanical gardens globally to work on plant conservation. In 1994, he became its secretary-general. He also helped create the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation for the United Nations. This is a big plan to save plants worldwide.
In 2005, he returned to Ireland. He became the director of the National Botanic Gardens (Ireland) in Dublin.
Later, in 2010, Peter Wyse Jackson moved to the United States. He became the president of the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, Missouri. This is a very important role in the world of plant science. At the same time, he became a professor of botany at Washington University in St. Louis. He worked there until January 2024, when he became President Emeritus. This means he still has a special connection to the garden but is no longer the main leader.
Peter Wyse Jackson has written many scientific papers. These papers are about how to protect plants, the role of botanic gardens, and saving plants on islands that are in danger.
