Peter Sherlock Wyse Jackson (born June 7, 1955) is an Irish botanist and environmentalist. A botanist is a scientist who studies plants. An environmentalist works to protect the natural world. He is currently the president of the Missouri Botanical Garden. He also holds a special teaching position in botany at Washington University in St. Louis.
Peter's Early Life
Peter Wyse Jackson was born in Kilkenny, Ireland, in 1955. His father was a religious leader called a bishop.
From a young age, Peter loved birds and plants. He spent his summer holidays exploring nature in County Kerry. When he was in high school, he learned about systematic botany. This is a way of studying plants to understand how they are related and how to classify them.
His Education and Studies
Peter Wyse Jackson went to Trinity College Dublin for his university studies. There, he earned degrees in botany. He also completed a PhD, which is a very high university degree. His PhD research focused on how to classify certain plants found in Ireland.
In 1980, he became the curator of the botanical garden at Trinity College. A curator is like a manager who takes care of the plants and collections.
Peter's Career in Plant Conservation
After leaving Trinity College in 1987, Peter Wyse Jackson joined a group focused on nature conservation. He helped set up an organization called Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI). In 1994, he became its secretary-general. This group helps botanical gardens around the world work together to save plants.
He also worked on a big plan for the United Nations called the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation. This plan helps countries protect plants all over the world.
In 2005, Peter returned to Ireland. He became the director of the National Botanic Gardens (Ireland) in Dublin.
In 2010, Peter Wyse Jackson moved to the United States. He became the president of the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, Missouri. This is a very important role in the world of plant science. At the same time, he also became a professor of botany at Washington University in St. Louis.
On January 23, 2024, it was announced that Dr. Wyse Jackson would become President Emeritus. This means he will still be connected to the garden but in a special advisory role.
Peter has written many scientific papers. These papers are about protecting plants, the work of botanic gardens, and saving plants on islands that are in danger.
