Petra is a town and municipality located on the beautiful Mediterranean island of Majorca. This island is part of the Balearic Islands, which is an autonomous community of Spain. The name "Petra" means "rock" in Latin.
Petra is famous for being the birthplace of St. Junípero Serra (1713-1784). He was a Franciscan friar, which is a type of religious brother. Father Serra traveled to California and founded the first nine of 21 Spanish missions in California. These missions were important settlements built from San Diego all the way to San Francisco.
Important People from Petra
- Pere Riutort Mestre (1935–2021) was from Majorca. He was a priest, a teacher, and someone who studied languages (a philologist) and religious ceremonies (a liturgist).
