Where is Peñaflor Located?
Peñaflor is in the central part of Chile, in an area known as the Chilean Central Valley. It's about 37 kilometers (23 miles) southwest of Santiago, which is the capital city of Chile. The commune covers an area of 69.2 square kilometers (about 26.7 square miles).
How Many People Live in Peñaflor?
According to a census taken in 2002, Peñaflor had 66,619 people living there. Out of these, 32,671 were men and 33,948 were women. Most of the people, about 94.9%, lived in urban (city) areas, while 5.1% lived in rural (countryside) areas. The population of Peñaflor grew quite a bit between 1992 and 2002, increasing by 32.8%.
How Peñaflor is Governed
Peñaflor is a "commune," which is a type of local government area in Chile. It is managed by a group called a municipal council. This council is led by an "alcalde," who is like a mayor. The alcalde is chosen by the people in an election every four years.
The alcalde for the 2012-2016 period was Manuel Fuentes Rosales. He worked with several council members to make decisions for the commune.
People in Peñaflor also vote for representatives to speak for them in the national government. These representatives go to the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate in Chile's capital.
