Peñamayor facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Peñamayor is a beautiful mountain range located in Asturias, a region in Spain. It's a place where nature shows off its amazing power, with tall peaks and deep valleys.

The highest point in the Peñamayor range is a peak called "Trigueiro," which stands at an impressive 1,197 metres (3,927 ft) (about 3,927 feet) above sea level. Another important peak, also named Peñamayor Peak, is 1,140 metres (3,740 ft) (about 3,740 feet) tall and gives the whole mountain range its name. This peak is found in the area of Nava.

What is Peñamayor Like?

Peñamayor is known for its incredible natural features. Over many, many years, water has slowly worn away the soft limestone rock, creating amazing deep cuts in the mountains called gorges. These gorges are like natural canyons, showing the power of water to shape the land.

The mountain range is shared by several local areas, including Bimenes, Laviana, Nava, and Piloña.

Plants and Animals of Peñamayor

The slopes of Peñamayor are covered with thick forests. These are mostly deciduous forests, which means the trees lose their leaves in the fall. You'll find strong oak trees, tasty chestnut trees, and tall beech trees growing here.

Many different animals call Peñamayor home. You might spot wild boar and deer roaming through the woods. These wild animals share the mountain with livestock like cows or sheep, which graze peacefully on the grassy slopes. High above, you might even see large vultures circling in the sky, looking for food.

Rivers and Water

The Pra River starts its journey high up on the slopes of Peñamayor Peak. This river is a tributary (a smaller river that flows into a larger one) of the Piloña River. The clean, fresh water from Peñamayor helps feed these important rivers.

Fun on the Mountain

Peñamayor isn't just for nature lovers; it's also a place for exciting sports! A popular event called the “Subida a Peñamayor” (which means "Climb to Peñamayor") is a challenging road race held on the mountain. It's a great way for athletes to test their strength and endurance while enjoying the beautiful scenery.
