The Pherrins River is a small river in Vermont, United States. It flows through Essex County and Orleans County. It is a branch, or tributary, of the Clyde River.

The valley where the Pherrins River flows is a helpful path. It connects Island Pond to Norton Pond. Norton Pond is where the Coaticook River begins. The Coaticook River flows northeast into Quebec, Canada.

Where the Pherrins River Flows

The Pherrins River starts in an area called Warren's Gore, Vermont. This is in Essex County, Vermont. Its source is on the northwest side of Bluff Mountain.

The river's starting point is:

  • About 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) west of a peak on Bluff Mountain.
  • About 3.1 kilometers (1.9 miles) southwest of the top of Middle Mountain.
  • About 2.3 kilometers (1.4 miles) northeast of the border of Orleans County.
  • About 8.6 kilometers (5.3 miles) north of Island Pond.

Journey of the River

The Pherrins River flows for about 16.9 kilometers (10.5 miles). Here is how it travels:

  • For 1.9 kilometers (1.2 miles), it flows northwest. It goes down a steep cliff, dropping 324 meters (1,063 feet). It reaches a railway line that crosses its valley.
  • For 2.5 kilometers (1.6 miles), it turns southwest. It passes through two small lakes. Then, another stream joins it from the north.
  • For 0.5 kilometers (0.3 miles), it continues southwest. It reaches the border of Orleans County.
  • For 1.2 kilometers (0.7 miles), it flows southwest. A mountain stream from the northwest joins it. Then, Pine Brook joins it from the east.
  • For 2.1 kilometers (1.3 miles), it flows south. Water from Underpass Pond joins it from the east.
  • For 2.8 kilometers (1.7 miles), it continues south. It reaches the border of Essex County.
  • For 5.9 kilometers (3.7 miles), it flows southeast until it meets the Clyde River.

The Pherrins River ends by flowing into the northwest side of the Clyde River. This meeting point is about 0.9 kilometers (0.6 miles) downstream from where Island Pond flows into the Clyde River. This spot is near Brighton, Vermont, on the west side of Island Pond.

Name of the River

The name "Pherrins River" was officially recognized on October 29, 1980. This was done by the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) of the U.S. federal government.
