Phillip Armour (born December 9, 1976) is a former American football player. He played as a center for the Indianapolis Colts in the National Football League (NFL). Before joining the NFL, he played college football for the North Texas Mean Green.

Phil Armour received a full football scholarship to the University of North Texas in 1995. After playing for four years there, he joined the Indianapolis Colts in 1999. He signed with them as an undrafted free agent right after the 1999 NFL Draft. During his first training camp, Phil got injured and was placed on injured reserve for the entire 1999 season. However, he made the Colts' main roster for the 2000 season. He left the Colts in April 2001 and officially retired from professional football in 2003.

Early Life and High School Football

Phil Armour was born in Geneva, Illinois. When he was in second grade, his family moved to Frisco, Texas. A year later, they moved to Denton, Texas, where Phil started third grade. He attended several schools in Denton, including Evers Park Elementary and Strickland Middle School. He graduated from Denton High School in May 1995.

At Denton High School, Phil wore jersey number 66. He played in District 5-5A.

High School Football Highlights

  • Sophomore Year (1992): Phil played as a Defensive Tackle. He made 44 tackles and 3 sacks.
  • Junior Year (1993): He played both Defensive Tackle and Offensive Center. He had 83 tackles and 10 sacks. He earned honors like 2nd-Team All-District at Defensive Tackle.
  • Senior Year (1994): Phil played as an Inside Linebacker and Offensive Center. He made 110 tackles and 13 sacks, earning 2nd-Team All-District honors at Linebacker.

Before choosing the University of North Texas, Phil visited five other top colleges. These included North Carolina State University and the University of Kansas.

College Football Career

Phil Armour played college football for The University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. He wore jersey number 67. His team was part of the NCAA Division I.

Key College Seasons

  • Freshman Year (1995): Phil started as a Defensive End for the first five games. He had 14 tackles and 1 sack. After an injury, he was moved to Offensive Center during the offseason.
  • Sophomore Year (1996): He started all 11 games as the Offensive Center. He earned 1st-Team All-Big West Center honors.
  • Junior Year (1997): Phil continued as the starting Offensive Center for all 11 games. He again earned 1st-Team All-Big West Center honors.
  • Senior Year (1998): He started all 11 games as the Offensive Center. For the third year in a row, he earned 1st-Team All-Big West Center. This was a special achievement, as he was the first player from North Texas in 30 years to earn this honor three times in a row.

After his senior year, Phil was invited to play in two special post-season all-star games:

  • The 74th-Annual East-West Shrine Game in Stanford, California, on January 16, 1999.
  • The 53rd-Annual Hooters Hula Bowl in Maui, Hawaii, on January 23, 1999.

Phil was not chosen in the 1999 NFL draft. However, he signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an Undrafted Free Agent right after the draft ended.

Phil Armour joined the Indianapolis Colts and wore jersey number 54. The Colts were part of the AFC East Division at that time.

NFL Seasons

  • 1999 Season (Rookie Year): Phil suffered a foot injury during training camp. This injury meant he was placed on Injured Reserve for the entire season.

Life After Football

As of 2016, Phil Armour lives in Leander, Texas, with his wife, Hailey, whom he married in October 2015. He has two sons, Blaise (born 2002) and Major (born 2015). Since July 2002, he has worked as a Sales Executive.
