Philibert François Rouxel, viscount de Blanchelande was an important French general and governor. He was born in Dijon, France, on February 21, 1735. He became well-known for his military service and for leading French colonies. He passed away in Paris on April 15, 1793.

A Military Career
Blanchelande began his military career in 1747 and served for many years. He reached a high rank called Maréchal de camp, which was like a senior general in the French army. He was a soldier for the Kingdom of France.
Governor of Tobago
In 1781, Blanchelande led French forces in a battle to take the island of Tobago from the British. After a successful invasion, he was appointed Governor of Tobago. He served in this role from 1781 until 1784.
Governor of Saint-Domingue
Later, in 1790, Blanchelande became the Governor-General of Saint-Domingue. This was a very important French colony in the Caribbean, which is known today as Haiti.
The Haitian Revolution
While he was governor, the Haitian Revolution began in 1791. This was a major uprising where enslaved people fought for their freedom. Blanchelande led the French royalist forces, who were trying to stop the revolt. He faced leaders of the revolution, such as Dutty Boukman.
Later Life and Death
In 1792, Blanchelande was replaced as governor by Adrien-Nicolas Piédefer, marquis de La Salle. After leaving his post, he faced serious accusations. He was accused of actions against the new French government during the French Revolution. A special court, called a Revolutionary Tribunal, found him guilty. He was sentenced to death and was executed by guillotine in Paris on April 15, 1793.
