Early Life and Education
Philip Davis was born in Nassau, Bahamas, on June 7, 1951. He was the oldest of eight children. His mother, Dorothy, worked as a domestic helper. His father, Brave Edward Davis, was a firefighter.
As a young child, Davis lived with his grandparents on Cat Island. He went to Old Bight All Age School there. Later, he moved back to Nassau and continued his education at Eastern Schools. He graduated from St. John's College. Growing up, his family was not wealthy, so he started working odd jobs at age seven to help out.
Becoming a Lawyer
After finishing his O-Levels (school exams), Davis worked in construction for a short time. He then got a job at Barclays bank. However, he soon decided he wanted to study law.
He became a legal clerk at a law firm. This means he worked for lawyers while learning about the law. He finished his legal studies in three years. In 1975, he became a lawyer in the Bahamas. He served as vice president and then president of the Bahamas Bar Association. He also became a partner at a law firm and later a magistrate, which is a type of judge.
Political Journey
Philip Davis became involved with the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) when he was young. He helped with their election campaigns, starting in 1967.
He was first elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Cat Island, Rum Cay & San Salvador in 1992. He lost his seat in 1997 but won it back in 2002. He has held this seat ever since.
In 2009, he was elected as the deputy leader of the Progressive Liberal Party. When the PLP won the 2012 general elections, Davis became the Deputy Prime Minister of the Bahamas. He also served as the Minister for Public Works and Urban Development. He held these roles until 2017, when the PLP lost the election.
After the 2017 election, Davis became the Leader of the Opposition and the leader of the Progressive Liberal Party. In 2015, he was given the special title of Queen's Counsel (QC).
Becoming Prime Minister
In September 2021, the Progressive Liberal Party won a big victory in a special election. They won 32 out of 39 seats in the House of Assembly. This happened as the country was working to recover from a difficult economic time.
On September 17, 2021, Philip "Brave" Davis was sworn in as the new Prime Minister of the Bahamas. He took over from Hubert Minnis.
Work as Minister of Public Works
As the Minister of Public Works and Urban Development, Davis oversaw many important projects. He helped ensure that about 1000 homes in the Family Islands and New Providence received indoor toilets and clean water.
He also supervised major building projects across the islands. This included building new roads, repairing seawalls, bringing electricity to Family Islands airports, and fixing buildings and docks damaged by hurricanes. He started the Urban Renewal Small Homes Repairs Program. This program helped over 1000 homeowners and created jobs for many contractors and tradespeople.
