Philip Edward Ruppe, born on September 29, 1926, is an American politician who is now retired. He represented Michigan in the United States House of Representatives for six terms, from 1967 to 1979. A member of the Republican Party, he also served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy during the Korean War. After his time in Congress, Ruppe worked in business and later ran for the United States Senate, though he was not successful.

Early Life and Education
Philip Ruppe was born in Laurium, Michigan, a small town. He finished high school in 1944. He is from a family with Slovak and Slovenian roots.
College and Military Service
Ruppe attended the V-12 Navy College Training Program from 1944 to 1946. He studied at both Central Michigan University and the University of Michigan. In 1948, he graduated from Yale University.
He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He held the rank of lieutenant. After his military service, Ruppe worked as a director for several banks. He also worked for R.L. Polk and Co.
Political Career
In 1966, Philip Ruppe decided to run for office. He became the Republican Party candidate. He aimed for a seat in the United States House of Representatives.
Serving in Congress
Ruppe ran for the Michigan's 11th congressional district. He won against the current Democratic Party representative, Raymond F. Clevenger. This victory led him to be elected to the 90th United States Congress.
He served in Congress for six terms. His time in office lasted from January 3, 1967, to January 3, 1979. He chose not to run for re-election in 1978. Bob Davis then took his place in the district.
Life After Politics
After leaving Congress, Ruppe continued to be involved in public life. He ran for the United States Senate in 1982. However, he was not successful in that election.
Business and Later Campaigns
Ruppe served as president of the Woodlak Company until 1986. About ten years later, he tried to return to Congress. He ran for his old district, which was now called the Michigan's 1st congressional district. He lost this election to Bart Stupak.
Family Life
Philip Ruppe married his first wife, Loret Miller Ruppe, in 1957. They had five daughters together. Loret was also active in public service. She was a member of the United States Electoral College for Michigan in 1980. She also served as the Director of the Peace Corps from 1981 to 1989. Later, she became the U.S. Ambassador to Norway from 1989 to 1993. Loret passed away on August 6, 1996.
In 2000, Philip Ruppe married his second wife, Ann Hammond Boutell. Ann Boutell Ruppe passed away on December 25, 2022.
Ruppe is a member of several organizations. These include the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Rotary International. He currently lives in Bethesda, Maryland.
