Philippa of Clarence (born August 16, 1355 – died January 5, 1381) was an English princess from the Late Middle Ages. She was also a powerful noblewoman in her own right, known as the suo jure Countess of Ulster. This means she inherited the title and lands directly, rather than through her husband.
Philippa's Early Life
Philippa was born at Eltham Palace in Kent, England, on August 16, 1355. She was the only child of Lionel of Antwerp, 1st Duke of Clarence, and Elizabeth de Burgh, 4th Countess of Ulster. Her father was the third son of King Edward III of England. This made Philippa the eldest grandchild of King Edward III and Queen Philippa of Hainault, who she was named after.
Marriage and Royal Connections
When Philippa was fourteen, she married Edmund Mortimer, 3rd Earl of March. Their wedding took place in the Queen's Chapel at Reading Abbey. This marriage was very important for English history.
Philippa's cousin, King Richard II of England, did not have any children. This meant that Philippa and her children were next in line to become the ruler of England. This was a big deal!
Later, during a time called the Wars of the Roses, different families fought over who should be king. The House of York claimed the throne because they were related to King Edward III through Philippa. Her son, Roger Mortimer, 4th Earl of March, and his daughter, Anne Mortimer, were key to this claim. Anne married Richard of Conisburgh, 3rd Earl of Cambridge, whose family was also part of the royal line.
Philippa passed away in 1381 when she was only 25 years old. She was buried at Wigmore Abbey in Herefordshire, England.
Her Children
Philippa and Edmund Mortimer had several children. Here are some of them:
- Elizabeth Mortimer (born 1371, died 1417): She first married Sir Henry 'Hotspur' Percy. They had two children. Later, she married Thomas Camoys, 1st Baron Camoys. Elizabeth was an ancestor of Jane Seymour, who became one of King Henry VIII's wives.
- Roger Mortimer, 4th Earl of March (born 1374, died 1398): He married Lady Alianore Holland. They had four children. The claim of the House of York to the English throne came through his oldest daughter, Anne Mortimer.
- Lady Philippa Mortimer (born 1375, died 1400): She married three times. Her first husband was John Hastings, 3rd Earl of Pembroke. Her second was Richard Fitzalan, 11th Earl of Arundel. Her third was Sir Thomas Poynings.
- Sir Edmund Mortimer (born 1376, died 1411): He married Catrin ferch Owain Glyndŵr, whose father was Owain Glyndŵr, a Welsh leader. They had children who sadly died young.
