About Philippe Daverio
Philippe Daverio was born in Mulhouse, France, in 1949. His father was Italian, and his mother was from Alsace. He was one of six children.
He went to the European School in Varese, Italy. Later, he studied economics at Bocconi University in Milan. He chose not to get a degree, saying he went to university to learn, not just to graduate.
His Art Galleries
In 1975, Daverio opened his first art gallery in Milan. He focused on avant-garde art, which means new and experimental art from the early 20th century. In 1986, he opened another gallery in New York City. He also opened a second gallery in Milan in 1989, which showed contemporary art (art from our time). His galleries closed in 1997.
As a Writer and Publisher
Daverio organized many art shows and published books about art. For example, he helped with an exhibition of Andy Warhol's Last Supper artwork. He also wrote books about famous artists like Giorgio de Chirico and Gino Severini.
From 2011, Daverio wrote many books with Rizzoli. Some of his book titles include The Imaginary Museum, The Long Century of Modernity, and The Good Road.
On Television
Philippe Daverio was a popular face on Italian television. In 1999, he worked as a special reporter for the TV show Art'è on RAI. From 2002 to 2012, he hosted Passepartout, a show about art and culture on Rai 3. He also appeared on other shows like Il Capitale and Emporio Daverio.
In 2008, he performed in an operetta called The Merry Widow at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. He also presented a ballet called Shock in 2009.
Teaching and Collaborations
Until 2016, Daverio taught art at the University of Palermo. He also wrote for many magazines and newspapers, such as Panorama, Vogue, and National Geographic. He was also the editor of Art and Dossier magazine.
Every summer, he gave a conference at a farmhouse in Italy. He also worked as an art consultant for the Genus Bononiae project in Bologna. This project helped launch many art exhibitions.
In 2016, he started a new TV show called Modern Culture.
Philippe Daverio passed away from cancer on September 2, 2020, at the age of 70.
Public Service
From 1993 to 1997, Daverio worked for the city of Milan. He was a councilor in charge of Culture, Education, and International Relations. He also advised the town council of Salemi in Sicily. In 2009, he became a provincial councilor for Milan.
Save Italy Movement
In 2011, Daverio started a movement called Save Italy. This was during the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy. The goal of this movement was to make people aware of Italy's amazing cultural heritage. He believed that Italy's culture belongs to the whole world, not just Italians.
