The Phillips seafood story began in 1914. That's when Augustus E. Phillips opened the very first seafood processing plant. This plant was on Hooper's Island in Maryland's Chesapeake Bay. It helped process seafood caught by many local watermen.
From Plant to Restaurant
Years later, in 1956, there was a lot of crab available. Augustus's son, Brice Phillips, and his wife, Shirley, had a great idea. They opened their first "crab shack" in Ocean City, Maryland. This was a place where people could enjoy fresh crab.
Brice and Shirley worked hard to make their restaurant bigger. They added a new dining room almost every year! Eventually, their Phillips Crab House could seat 1,400 people. That's a lot of hungry customers!
Where the Crab Comes From
In 2002, there was a discussion about where Phillips got its crab meat. Some people thought the company was using crab from Asia. This was different from the famous Maryland blue crab that many expected. Phillips Foods now uses crab from different parts of the world.
