What Are Physalis Plants?
Physalis plants are known for their unique fruit. This fruit is small and usually orange. It grows inside a papery, lantern-like covering. This covering is actually part of the plant's flower, called the calyx. It protects the fruit as it grows.
The Fruit and Its Taste
The fruit inside the husk looks a bit like a small tomato. It also tastes somewhat like a tomato, but with a mild, refreshing sourness. Because of this, you can use Physalis fruits in many of the same ways you would use tomatoes. They are great in salads, sauces, or even eaten fresh as a snack!
Many types of Physalis are commonly called groundcherries. This name comes from how some species grow close to the ground.
Where Physalis Plants Grow
Most Physalis species are native to the Americas. This means they naturally grow there. You can find them in many different climates, from warm tropical areas to cooler regions. Only one known species is not originally from the Americas.
