What's in a Name?
The Pic Schrader was once known as the Grand Batchimale. It was renamed to honor a famous person named Franz Schrader. He lived from 1844 to 1924. Schrader was a mountaineer, mapmaker, geographer, and painter. He explored and mapped many mountains and valleys in the Pyrenees during the 1800s.
Franz Schrader was also the first person known to climb this mountain. He reached the top on August 11, 1878, with a mountain guide named Henri Passet. The name Batchimale comes from the border ridge where the mountain is located. It is the highest point of this ridge. There is also a smaller peak called the Petit Batchimale. Franz Schrader once wrote about the name Pic Pétard, which means "Thunder Peak".
Where is Pic Schrader Located?
Pic Schrader sits right on the border between France and Spain. It is located between the Louron valley in the Hautes-Pyrénées region of France and the Province of Huesca in Spain. This mountain is also part of the Pyrenean drainage divide, which means it helps separate the rivers that flow to different seas.
A Brief History of the First Climb
The first recorded climb of Pic Schrader happened on August 11, 1878. Franz Schrader, Henri Passet, and a porter (whose name is not remembered) reached the summit at 10:05 AM. This was an important moment in the exploration of the Pyrenees.
How to Reach the Summit
You can get to Pic Schrader from the French side or the Spanish side. From France, climbers can start their journey through the valley of La Pez. Another option is to begin from the refuge (a mountain shelter) of La Soula.
From the Spanish side, there are two main paths. One popular route starts from the Viados refuge. It follows the western ridge of Punta del Sabre. A less used path goes past the beautiful Batchimale lakes.
