The Pic de Montferrat is a tall mountain peak that stands right on the border between France and Spain. It reaches a height of 3,129 meters (about 10,266 feet). This impressive peak is part of the Massif du Vignemale, a group of mountains in the famous Pyrenees range.
Where is Pic de Montferrat?
This mountain is found in the Hautes-Pyrénées area of France. It sits between two towns, Cauterets and Gavarnie. It's also part of the beautiful Pyrenees National Park. To its north, you'll find the large glacier d'Ossoue. There's also a smaller glacier called Montferrat to its southeast.
The First Climb
The first time people climbed to the very top of Pic de Montferrat was on August 1, 1792. These first climbers were local shepherds. They built a small stone tower, called a turret, on the summit. This was done under the orders of Louis-Philippe Reinhart Junker. He led a team of geodesists. Geodesists are scientists who measure the Earth's shape and size. Their job was to figure out exactly where the border between France and Spain should be.
