Where is Pico de Malpaso?
This mountain's top is right in the middle of El Hierro island. It sits on the border between two local areas called Frontera and El Pinar de El Hierro.
The very top of the mountain is about 1,502 meters (or 4,928 feet) above sea level. From this high point, you can see other islands in the Canary group, like La Palma.
How was Pico de Malpaso formed?
The island of El Hierro is the newest island in the Canary archipelago. It started forming about 3 million years ago. Its current shape comes from erosion wearing down its original volcanic cone. Erosion is like nature's way of shaping the land with wind and water.
What lives on Pico de Malpaso?
The sides of Pico de Malpaso are home to forests and heaths. Heaths are open areas with small shrubs. You can find special Canary Islands juniper trees here. Some of these trees are very old, possibly over a thousand years!
An important animal living here is the El Hierro giant lizard. In Spanish, it's called lagarto Salmor. This lizard is an endangered species, which means there are not many left, and they need protection.
