History of Piedmont
How Piedmont Started
The city of Piedmont was founded on land that was claimed during the Unassigned Land Run. This famous event happened on April 22, 1889. Dr. E. H. Long officially founded the town in 1903.
Railroad and Growth
Piedmont grew thanks to a railroad called the St. Louis, El Reno and Western Railway. This train line connected Guthrie to El Reno. Because of the railroad, Piedmont became a place where farmers could sell their crops. However, the railroad stopped running in 1924.
For the first half of the 1900s, Piedmont stayed a small, quiet farming town. But starting in the 1970s, more people began to move there. It became a popular "bedroom community." This means people lived in Piedmont but worked in nearby Oklahoma City. A new road, the "Northwest Expressway" (Oklahoma State Highway 3), helped the population grow a lot. It increased by 124%!
2011 Tornado Impact
On May 24, 2011, a very strong tornado hit Piedmont and the areas around it. This tornado was called the 2011 El Reno–Piedmont tornado. It was rated as an EF5, which is the strongest type of tornado.
The tornado destroyed about 180 homes in Piedmont. It caused over $20 million in damage to buildings and property. Sadly, two children also lost their lives because of the storm.
Where is Piedmont Located?
Piedmont is in the northeastern part of Canadian County. It is about 10 miles (16 km) north of Yukon. The city's southern edge touches the limits of Oklahoma City. The center of Piedmont is about 22 miles (35 km) northwest of the center of Oklahoma City.
