A Look at Piedra Gorda's Past
Piedra Gorda has an interesting history, just like many places in Puerto Rico. The island of Puerto Rico used to be controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Becoming a U.S. Territory
After the war, Puerto Rico became an "unincorporated territory" of the United States. This means it is part of the U.S. but does not have all the same rights as a U.S. state. In 1899, the United States government counted everyone living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 895 people lived in Piedra Gorda barrio at that time.
