Becoming a Canadian Senator
Pierre Nolin became a Senator on June 18, 1993. He was chosen by Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. Mr. Nolin had been a strong supporter of Mr. Mulroney in Quebec politics since 1976. This was when Mulroney first tried to become the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party.
Working in the Senate
For ten years, Senator Nolin was a very active member of the Progressive Conservative Party in the Senate. He helped bring together the Progressive Conservative Party and the Canadian Alliance in 2003. This merger created the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC).
Mr. Nolin was seen as an influential voice from Quebec within the Conservative Party. In 2005, he announced that the Quebec part of the Conservative Party would suggest some "moderate" ideas. One idea was to support equal rights for married same-sex couples in the courts. Many of these ideas from Quebec were accepted, with some small changes. A year later, he was appointed the main Speaker of the Senate. This happened on November 27, 2014. Prime Minister Stephen Harper appointed him after the previous Speaker, Noël Kinsella, retired.
