Playing for Football Clubs
Pierre Womé started his football journey in Cameroon, playing for youth teams like Fogape Yaoundé and Canon Yaoundé. In 1996, he moved to Italy to begin his professional career with Vicenza Calcio. He spent almost seven years playing for different teams in Italy.
In August 2002, he moved to England to play for Fulham F.C. in the Premier League. While at Fulham, he scored one goal in a game against West Brom in February 2003.
After his time in England, Pierre Womé played for several well-known clubs. These included RCD Espanyol in Spain, Inter Milan in Italy, and Werder Bremen in Germany. He joined 1. FC Köln in Germany in 2008 and left the team in June 2010.
Later in his career, Womé returned to play in his home country, Cameroon. In 2012, he joined Coton Sport FC de Garoua. From 2012 to 2014, he played for Canon Yaoundé again. He also had short spells with other Cameroonian clubs like UMS de Loum and Renaissance de Ngoumou in 2014.
In September 2014, Womé signed with FC Chambly in France. He later joined US Roye-Noyon in 2015, which was a French fourth-tier team.
Playing for Cameroon
Pierre Womé was a very important player for the Cameroon national team in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He was the main left-back for his country.
Winning Big Tournaments
He was a key part of the teams that won the Africa Cup of Nations twice in a row, in 2000 and 2002. He also helped Cameroon win the Olympic gold medal in 2000.
All three of these big tournaments were won after a penalty shoot-out. Pierre Womé took a penalty kick in all three of these important wins. In the Olympic gold medal match, he scored the fifth and winning penalty, which gave his country the title. He also scored from the penalty spot in the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations final.
Womé also played as Cameroon's first-choice left-back in the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cup tournaments.
A Difficult Moment
On 8 October 2005, Pierre Womé had a very tough moment during a World Cup qualifying match against Egypt. In the 95th minute, he had a penalty kick that could have sent Cameroon to the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Unfortunately, his shot hit the outside of the goalpost, and the game ended in a 1–1 draw. Because of this, the Ivory Coast qualified for the World Cup instead of Cameroon.
Pierre Womé announced his retirement from international football in March 2007. However, he later returned to the team in 2009 for a 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification match.
After Playing Football
In March 2017, after he stopped playing professionally, Pierre Womé was appointed as the sporting director for his former club, Canon Yaoundé. This means he helps manage the club's sports activities and players.
