The Pilar tuco-tuco (scientific name: Ctenomys pilarensis) is a type of rodent. Rodents are a group of mammals that includes mice, rats, and squirrels. This animal belongs to the family Ctenomyidae, which are often called tuco-tucos.

You can find the Pilar tuco-tuco in southern Paraguay. It lives in the Ñeembucú and Misiones Departments, especially to the east of the city of Pilar. These tuco-tucos prefer to live in areas where the soil is sandy.

What is a Tuco-Tuco?

Tuco-tucos are small, burrowing rodents. They are known for their strong claws, which help them dig tunnels underground. They spend most of their lives in these tunnels, where they find food and stay safe from predators. The name "tuco-tuco" comes from the sound they make, which sounds like "tuc-tuc."

Where the Pilar Tuco-Tuco Lives

The Pilar tuco-tuco lives in specific parts of Paraguay. These areas have sandy soil, which is perfect for digging their homes. They live in a few separate groups, meaning their populations are not spread out widely.

Why the Pilar Tuco-Tuco Needs Help

The Pilar tuco-tuco is considered an endangered animal. This means it is at a high risk of disappearing forever. One big reason for this is that its home is being changed. People are turning the land where these animals live into farms. This loss of habitat makes it very hard for the tuco-tucos to survive. Sometimes, people also see them as pests, which can cause more problems for them.

Its Unique DNA

Like all living things, the Pilar tuco-tuco has DNA, which carries all its genetic information. Scientists study something called a karyotype. A karyotype is like a map of an animal's chromosomes, which are tiny structures in every cell that contain DNA. For the Pilar tuco-tuco, its karyotype shows it has either 48 or 50 chromosomes. This number is unique to its species.
