The community is at the base of Tussey Mountain. Locals often call this mountain "Pine Grove Mountain." It's a long ridge that forms the southern edge of the valley.

According to the United States Census Bureau, Pine Grove Mills covers an area of about 6.49 square kilometers (2.50 square miles). All of this area is land. The village is about 5 miles (8 km) south of State College. You can find it where State Highways 26 and 45 meet.

  • PA 26 goes south over Tussey Mountain into Huntingdon County.
  • PA 45 continues southwest through the valley, also entering Huntingdon County.

History of Pine Grove Mills

Pine Grove Mills was founded by Thomas Ferguson. In 1791, he bought 321 acres (1.3 square kilometers) of land. He paid 300 pounds in gold and silver coins for it.

The First Mills

In 1800, Thomas Ferguson built the first mills. He did this by damming Slab Cabin Run. These mills gave the town its name. Local stories say that a group of pine trees separated the sawmill from the gristmill. This "pine grove" and the "mills" gave the village its unique name.

Pattonville and Pine Grove Mills

In 1815, John Patton Jr. started a town called Pattonville. This new town was at the east end of Pine Grove Mills. For a while, the whole village was known as Pattonville. However, the post office, which started in 1809, always kept the name Pine Grove Mills. Eventually, the village went back to its original name.

Recent Events

In 2001, Pine Grove Mills celebrated its 200th birthday! A special book was published to mark this event. In June 2018, a farmers market started in the parking lot of St Paul Lutheran Church.

Community Planning

Since 2018, the Centre Region Planning Agency has been working with residents. They are creating a plan for the future of Pine Grove Mills. This plan helps guide how the community will grow and develop. The Ferguson Township Board of Supervisors approved this plan in November 2019. They also created a committee to help put the plan into action.
