The Ping-Lin Tea Museum (traditional Chinese: 坪林茶業博物館; simplified Chinese: 坪林茶业博物馆; pinyin: Pínglín Cháyè Bówùguǎn), also called the Pinglin Tea Museum, is a special place in the hills of Pinglin District, New Taipei, Taiwan. It is one of the biggest tea museums in the world! Ping-Lin is famous for making a type of tea called Pouchong tea. Farmers usually start picking this "spring tea" around the end of March.

History of the Museum

The Ping-Lin Tea Museum first opened its doors on January 12, 1997. It has been teaching visitors about tea for many years.

Museum Architecture

The museum building has a unique design. It is built in a style called Fujianese architecture. This style often includes a large round courtyard. It also has long hallways and round doors.

The museum also shows some influence from a style called Brutalist architecture. This style uses strong, simple shapes. It often features raw materials like concrete. Brutalist buildings were popular in the mid-1900s. They are known for being practical and affordable.

What You Can See and Do

The museum has three main areas where you can learn about tea. You can discover the history of tea. You can also see how tea is grown and made. There is a special exhibit about different kinds of tea leaves.

  • Experience Center: Here, you can learn about tea in fun ways. There are interactive displays that let you explore tea.
  • Museum Shop: If you want to take some tea home, you can buy it here.
  • Tea Room: This is a great place to try different teas. You can taste them and enjoy a quiet moment.

Behind the museum, there is a lovely ecological park and walking trail. You can see a pond with carp fish. There is also a waterfall and a forest of tea flowers. Sometimes, you might spot rare insects or interesting plants.

Opening Hours

The museum is open every day. On weekdays, it is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. On weekends, it stays open a little longer, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The museum closes on the first Monday of each month. It also closes during the Chinese New Year holiday. If there are natural disasters, the museum might close for safety.

Admission Fee

Since July 1, 2016, there has been a small entry fee to visit the museum. The fee is NT$80 per person.

However, many people can enter for free! This includes:

  • People who live in New Taipei.
  • Visitors who are 65 years old or older.
  • Children under 12 years old.
  • Students.
  • People with disabilities.
  • Low-income earners.
  • Military veterans.

How to Get There

You can easily reach the museum by bus. Take buses Green 12 or 923 from the Xindian metro station.
