The History of Pingelly

Pingelly started as a small stop along the Great Southern Railway line. This railway was built by the Western Australian Land Company and opened in 1889. Later that year, the company planned the town and made land available for people to settle.

In 1896, the government bought the railway and the land. The town was officially named in 1898. Its name comes from the Aboriginal word for the Pingeculling Rocks. These rocks are found north of the town. Early settlers called the area Pingegulley for many years.

In early 1898, the recorded population of the town was 89 people. This included 52 males and 37 females. However, this count did not include all residents, such as Aboriginal people.

A local hall for farmers was built in 1894. It was opened with a special event that included a hunt and a ball.

Between 1939 and 1941, Pingelly hosted three motor racing events each year. One famous race was the Great Southern Flying 50. The last race was won by Harley Hammond. Motor racing then stopped in Western Australia because of World War 2.
