Allium trifoliatum, often called pink garlic or Hirsute garlic, is a type of wild onion that grows around the Mediterranean Sea. It is found naturally in many countries, including France, Cyprus, Malta, Italy (like Sicily and Sardinia), Greece, Egypt, Turkey, Lebanon, Palestine, and Israel.
What is Pink Garlic?
Pink garlic is a plant that comes back every year, which means it's a perennial herb. It can grow up to about 30 centimeters (or about 12 inches) tall. This plant is part of the onion family, but it's a wild type, not usually grown for eating like the onions you find in a grocery store.
What Does Pink Garlic Look Like?
This wild onion has pretty flowers that grow in a tight cluster called an umbel. Imagine a small umbrella shape where all the flower stems (called pedicels) come from one point. The individual flower petals, which are actually called tepals in plants like onions, are usually white. Sometimes, they have lovely pink or red stripes running down the middle.
Where Does Pink Garlic Grow?
Pink garlic loves the warm weather of the Mediterranean region. It grows in many different countries around the Mediterranean Sea, from southern Europe to parts of the Middle East and North Africa. This wide range shows how well it has adapted to different environments in that area.
