The least pipistrelle (Pipistrellus tenuis) is a very tiny type of bat. It is part of a group called vesper bats. These bats are known for being active around sunset and sunrise. This small bat is one of the smallest bats in the world!

Where Does the Least Pipistrelle Live?

The least pipistrelle bat lives in many parts of Asia and some islands in Oceania. You can find it from sea level up to about 769 meters (2,523 feet) high. That's almost as tall as some small mountains!

Countries and Islands

These little bats live in places like Laos, southeastern China, and Hainan island. They are also found in the Philippines, Borneo, Indonesia, and East Timor. Other homes include Malaysia, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.

What Does the Least Pipistrelle Look Like?

The least pipistrelle is a small bat with a body and head length of about 6 to 7 centimeters (2.4 to 2.8 inches). Its forearm, which is part of its wing, is about 3 centimeters (1.2 inches) long. When its wings are spread out, they can reach 18 to 24 centimeters (7 to 9.4 inches) wide.

Size and Weight

This bat is very light, weighing only about 6 to 8 grams (0.2 to 0.3 ounces). That's less than the weight of a few paper clips! Female bats are usually a bit bigger than the males.

Colors and Features

The least pipistrelle has dark brown to black fur on its back. Its belly is a lighter color. Its wings, face, and ears are black. Unlike some other bats, its wings do not have pale edges. It has a short, wide nose and small, round nostrils. Its small ears have special parts called tragi and antitragi. The fur on its body is thick, short, and feels very soft.
