Pippi Longstocking is an animated musical adventure comedy film from 1997. It was directed by Michael Schaack and Clive A. Smith. The story was written by Catharina Stackelberg. It is based on the famous Pippi Longstocking children's books by Astrid Lindgren.

This movie was a team effort between Sweden, Germany, and Canada. Companies like Svensk Filmindustri, IdunaFilm, TFC Trickompany, and Nelvana helped make it. You'll hear the voices of Melissa Altro, Catherine O'Hara, Gordon Pinsent, Dave Thomas, Wayne Robson, and Carole Pope.

In Canada and the United States, Legacy Releasing showed the movie in theaters. Later, Warner Home Video released it on VHS and DVD. This film also led to a TV show! The show started on Teletoon in Canada and later aired on HBO. Some episodes were even put together to make another movie called Pippi's Adventures on the South Seas.

What's the Story?

The movie starts with Pippi sailing the world with her dad, Captain Efraim Longstocking. She also has her horse, Horse, and her monkey, Mr. Nilsson, with her. One stormy night, a big hurricane hits. Pippi's dad is washed overboard into the sea. He shouts to Pippi that he will meet her in Villa Villekulla.

So, Pippi and her animal friends head to their home, Villa Villekulla. They wait for her dad to return. Soon after arriving, she meets two kids from across the street. Their names are Tommy and Annika. They love Pippi's free spirit and how much fun she is.

Pippi has never been to school before. Tommy and Annika convince her to go. She gets into a bit of trouble there. But she also wins over her new classmates.

A local lady, Mrs. Prysselius, notices Pippi. She thinks Pippi needs to live with a family. Mrs. Prysselius talks to the police about Pippi living alone. She mentions Pippi has lots of gold coins and leaves her door unlocked. Two thieves in jail, Bloom and Thunder-Karlsson, overhear this. They decide to rob Pippi once they break out.

Pippi, Tommy, and Annika go on many exciting adventures. They have some close calls too! Pippi manages to charm almost everyone she meets. But Mrs. Prysselius and Tommy and Annika's parents are still worried.

Just when Mrs. Prysselius is about to take Pippi to a children's home, Pippi's dad returns! He wants to take her back to their life at sea. But Pippi decides she can't leave her new friends. She chooses to stay in Villa Villekulla.
