A Glimpse into the Past: Pitt Town Bottoms' History
Pitt Town Bottoms holds a special place in the history of the Hawkesbury district. It was one of the very first places settled by Europeans in this region.
Early Settlements in 1794
In 1794, Lieutenant-Governor Francis Grose gave out fifteen farms here. These farms were each about 12 hectares (30 acres) in size. They were given to free settlers, who were people who came to Australia without being prisoners.
These early farms were very important. They grew fresh food for the new settlement of Sydney, which was still quite small back then. The food was then sent down the Hawkesbury River to Sydney.
James Ruse's Farm
Among the land given out, two specific plots (numbers 43 and 44) were bought by James Ruse. He was an "emancipee," which means he was a former prisoner who had earned his freedom. James Ruse was known as one of Australia's first successful farmers.
Pitt Town Bottoms Today
In more recent times, Pitt Town Bottoms has become known for a few interesting things.
Radio-Controlled Aircraft Flying Field
The area is now home to a popular field where people fly radio-controlled aircraft. These are miniature planes, helicopters, or drones that are controlled from the ground using a remote. It's a fun hobby for many enthusiasts.
The Turf Industry
Pitt Town Bottoms is also a major centre for the Sydney lawn turf industry. This means that a lot of the grass used for lawns, parks, and sports fields in Sydney is grown right here.
