History of Pittsburg
The first people who were not native to the land settled in the Pittsburg area in 1899. Daniel Edwards and his son Thomas started a coal mine about two miles east of a town called Kiowa. This area was part of the Choctaw Nation at that time.
In 1903, the United States Postal Service opened a post office in a place called Cowpers. Daniel Edwards became the first postmaster. The name of the post office changed to Edwards, Indian Territory, on September 3, 1903. It was named after J.R. Edwards, who worked with coal.
Later, on August 27, 1909, the town's name changed again to Pittsburg, Oklahoma. This new name honors Pittsburg County, which was created when Oklahoma became a state in 1907.
When the town was first founded, it was located in the Moshulatubbee District of the Choctaw Nation. It was near the border of Atoka and Tobucksy counties. Old maps sometimes showed it in one county and sometimes in the other.
