Pladda (which is Pladaigh in Scottish Gaelic) is a small island off the coast of Scotland. It's located about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) from the southern tip of the Isle of Arran. This island is part of the Firth of Clyde area in western Scotland. Pladda is not currently home to any people. It is known for its Pladda Lighthouse, which works automatically. The island is privately owned and was put up for sale in 1990.
Island Features
Pladda is a small island shaped a bit like a teardrop. It is about 700 meters (2,300 feet) long. The highest point on the island is only 27 meters (89 feet) above sea level. Even though it's a very small island, Pladda has its own source of fresh water.
There is another tiny island also called Pladda Island. This other island is located in the Lynn of Lorn, between Lismore and Ardmucknish Bay.
Pladda Lighthouse
The Pladda Lighthouse and its other buildings stand at the very southern end of Pladda. This lighthouse helps guide ships safely through the waters.
Historical Church
It seems there might have been a church or chapel on Pladda a long time ago. Writers from the 1400s and 1500s, like John of Fordun, mentioned an "isle of St Blase of Pladda." Today, there are no signs left of this old church, and no one knows exactly where it was located on the island.
