A Look at Planas's History
How Planas Became Part of the U.S.
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a special area of the United States. It is known as an "unincorporated territory." This means it is part of the U.S. but has different rules than a U.S. state.
