Plata is a special kind of neighborhood, called a barrio, located in the town of Lajas, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 2,620 people lived there. It covers an area of about 6.29 square miles.
A Look at Plata's Past
After the Spanish–American War ended in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the United States.
In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a count of people, known as a census, across Puerto Rico. This count showed that the combined population of Plata and another nearby barrio, Santa Rosa, was 1,015 people.
