The pleasant bolo mouse, also called the pleasant akodont, (Necromys amoenus) is a small rodent. It belongs to the Cricetidae family, which includes many mice and hamsters. This little mouse lives in grassy areas high up in the mountains of Bolivia and Peru.
What Does It Look Like?
The pleasant bolo mouse is a small mouse. Its body, from head to tail, is about 95 and 103 mm (3.7 and 4.1 in) long. Its tail adds another 63 and 79 mm (2.5 and 3.1 in).
Its fur is yellowish-brown on its back and upper parts. You might also see some black hairs mixed in. The mouse's face, cheeks, and sides are a yellowish-buff color. Its belly is white, and there's a clear line where the colors change.
The pleasant bolo mouse has short whiskers. Its ears are round and covered with fur. Its tail is dark brown or reddish-brown on top and white underneath. Its paws have reddish-brown fur, and its claws are hidden by fluffy tufts of hair.
Where Does It Live?
The pleasant bolo mouse lives in the Andes Mountains in South America. You can find it in western Bolivia and southeastern Peru. It prefers the high-altitude grasslands called the altiplano. These areas are very high up, between 3,200 and 4,300 m (10,500 and 14,100 ft) above sea level.
It has also been seen on the eastern side of the Andes in Salta Province, Argentina. This mouse likes places with rocks and scattered grass. It especially likes areas where certain grasses, like Peruvian feathergrass (Jarava ichu), grow. It can also live in Polylepis woodlands and even in farm areas in Bolivia. This shows it can adapt well to changes in its home.
What Does It Do?
The pleasant bolo mouse is active during the day. This means it is a diurnal animal. It mostly eats insects.
