History of Pleasantville

Pleasantville was officially planned and started on August 1, 1849. The land where the town was built used to belong to William Wesley Jordan. Before he owned it, the land was traded for one horse and $30.

Pleasantville City Hall

On June 11, 1872, people asked the court to make Pleasantville an official city. An election was held, and 46 people voted yes, while 16 voted no.

When the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad Line was finished in 1879, it passed through Pleasantville. This helped the town grow a lot. Pleasantville became a busy business center in Marion County. It was also the main place to ship goods between Knoxville and Des Moines.

The first records of how many people lived in Pleasantville are from 1900. At that time, 738 residents called it home.

The first school in Pleasantville was built in the fall of 1847. In 1868, the school district worked with the Masonic Lodge to build a three-story brick building. This building was used as a school until 1992. Today, the Pleasantville School District has three buildings: an elementary school, a middle school, and a high school.

A movie called Pleasantville came out in the United States on October 23, 1998. To promote the movie, an online contest was held. People could enter for a chance to visit Pleasantville, Iowa. More than 30,000 people entered the contest. The person who won chose to take a $10,000 cash prize instead of the trip.
