The Pleiades are seven special nymphs in Greek mythology. They were close friends of Artemis, who was the goddess of the hunt. These seven sisters were the daughters of Atlas, a powerful Titan, and the nymph Pleione. They were all born on Mount Cyllene in a place called Arcadia.

Who Were the Pleiades?

The Pleiades were known for their beauty and their connections to powerful gods. Each sister had her own story and sometimes had children with important figures in Greek myths.

Meet the Seven Sisters

  • Maia: She was the oldest of the sisters. Maia became the mother of Hermes, the messenger of the gods, and his father was Zeus, the king of the gods.
  • Elektra: Elektra also had children with Zeus. She was the mother of Dardanus and Iasion.
  • Taygete: Taygete was another sister who had a child with Zeus. She was the mother of Lacedaemon.
  • Alkyone: Alkyone had a child with Poseidon, the god of the sea. She was the mother of Hyrieus.
  • Kelaino: Kelaino also had children with Poseidon. She was the mother of Lycus and Eurypylus.
  • Asterope: Sometimes called Sterope, she was the mother of Oenomaus. His father was Ares, the god of war.
  • Merope: Merope was the youngest of the Pleiades. She was the only one who married a human, Sisyphus.
