The plum-throated cotinga (Cotinga maynana) is a stunning bird that belongs to the Cotingidae family. These birds are known for their bright colors. You can find them living in the warm, wet forests of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.
These cotingas love to live in subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests. They also make their homes in tropical swamps. Even in forests that have been changed by people, they can sometimes still be found.
About Its Name
Scientists give every living thing a special two-part name. This helps everyone around the world know exactly which plant or animal they are talking about. This system is called binomial nomenclature.
The plum-throated cotinga got its scientific name, Cotinga maynana, a long time ago. In 1760, a French scientist named Mathurin Jacques Brisson wrote about this bird. He saw a bird from a place called Maynas Province, Peru. He gave it a French name, Le cotinga des Mayas.
Later, in 1766, a famous Swedish scientist named Carl Linnaeus officially named many animals. He gave the plum-throated cotinga its scientific name, Ampelis maynana. He also used Brisson's earlier work to help him. Today, this bird is placed in the genus Cotinga. It is the only type of plum-throated cotinga, meaning there are no different subspecies.
