The Story Behind the Name
The rocky point that Point Arkwright is named after was first called Petrie Heads. This name came from Andrew Petrie, an early explorer of Queensland in the 1840s. He was also the first settler of Brisbane.
The name Point Arkwright came later, after 1861. It is believed to be named after Sir Richard Arkwright. He was a famous English inventor who created machines for spinning cotton. Point Arkwright was likely named at the same time as Point Cartwright. Point Cartwright was named after Edmund Cartwright, who invented weaving machines. These two inventors' work complemented each other, just like the two points are close together on the coast.
