How Yaroomba Got Its Name

This suburb began as a housing area called Coronation Beach in 1953. This name honored the crowning of Queen Elizabeth II. In 1961, the name was changed to Yaroomba. This new name comes from the Kabi language, a local Aboriginal language, and it means "surf on the beach."

The Story of the Kirkdale Shipwreck

In 2007, a large piece of wood, weighing about 200 kilograms, was found on Yaroomba Beach. This piece of wood was part of a shipwreck! The ship was called the Kirkdale. It was a sailing ship, about 30 meters long, built in England.

The Kirkdale left Launceston in May 1862, heading for Sri Lanka. However, after reaching Cooktown, the captain decided to sail south again. On July 19, 1862, the ship ran aground (got stuck) off Yaroomba Beach. The ship caught fire, but luckily, the captain and crew were able to escape in a boat and survived.
