The Mountain Itself
The suburb gets its name from Mount Coolum, a mountain right in its center. This mountain is 207 meters (about 679 feet) tall. Long ago, it was sometimes called Half Way Lump. Today, the mountain is a protected area within the Mount Coolum National Park.
History of the Name
The name Coolum comes from the Kabi language. The Kabi people are the traditional owners of this land. The word gulum or kulum means without or wanting. This name might relate to an old Aboriginal story. The legend says that the mountain's head was knocked off during a fight with another mountain, Ninderry. This head then became Mudjimba Island, which is also known as Old Woman Island.
