Mudjimba is a lovely coastal suburb located in the Sunshine Coast Region of Queensland, Australia. It's part of the bigger Maroochydore area. In 2021, about 2,664 people called Mudjimba home. This area is known for its beautiful beaches and a special island nearby.

Exploring Mudjimba's Location

Mudjimba is right next to the Coral Sea on its eastern side, which means it has a fantastic beach! To the north and north-west, you'll find the David Low Way, a main road. Ocean Drive forms its southern border.

Residential Areas and Nature

The suburb has two main areas where people live. One is close to the beach in the north-east. The other is along Najoor Road in the western part of Mudjimba. The southern part of the suburb is a protected natural space. It's part of the Maroochy River Conservation Park, which helps keep the local environment safe. You can also find small marshy areas scattered around.

Mudjimba Island: A Special Place

About 1 kilometre (0.6 miles) off the coast is Mudjimba Island. This island is also part of the Mudjimba suburb and is protected as part of the Maroochy River Conservation Park. The island is sometimes called Old Woman Island. It has a cool Aboriginal legend about two women who were stuck there. They gathered Midyam berries from a local bush for food.

Mudjimba's Past: A Quick Look

The name Mudjimba comes from the Kabi language. It's from the word midyim or mudjim, which is the name of a local plant. This plant, called the Midyam bush, has sweet white berries with green spots. The Kabi legend about the two women on the island gathering these berries is how the name came to be.

Community Milestones

The Mudjimba Residents Association was started on October 13, 1960. This group helps look after the local community. The area was first developed as a beachside suburb under the name Surfrider Estate. The Mudjimba Rural Fire Brigade, a volunteer fire service, began in February 1985. Harry Stuart was their first fire warden. The Mudjimba Surf Life Saving Club, which helps keep beachgoers safe, was founded in 1996.

The HMAS Brisbane Dive Site

In January 2003, the Queensland Government decided to sink a old warship called the HMAS Brisbane. They wanted it to become an artificial reef and a cool dive site for people to explore. On July 31, 2005, the ship was sunk about 2.8 nautical miles (5.2 km) off the Mudjimba coast. It rests in 27 metres (89 feet) of water.

The ship was filled with concrete and small explosives were used to make holes in its side. It sank in just over two minutes! It landed with its bottom stuck a metre into the seabed. The highest part of the ship is about 3 metres (10 feet) below the water's surface. This wreck has become a home for many sea creatures and is a popular spot for divers. It has also helped the local economy a lot.

The Sunshine Coast Airport is right next to Mudjimba. This makes it easy for people to travel to and from the area. Most people in Mudjimba use their own cars to get around. On average, households have two vehicles. Only a very small number of people use public transport for their daily trips.
