School History and Growth
Point Grey Secondary School's main building was designed by Fred Townley and Matheson. It was built in 1929. The building has a special style called Collegiate Gothic.
When it first opened, Point Grey was a junior high school. Students started classes there in September 1929. It stayed a junior high until 1965. That year, it became a full secondary school, teaching students from grade 8 to 12.
In 1965, a new part of the school was added. This new section included a gym, science labs, and a library. Later, in 2006, the school worked with the Parks Board to build a new artificial turf field. They also improved the track around it with a rubber surface.
Point Grey offers special Advanced Placement (AP) courses. These are like university-level classes that students can take in high school. They include subjects such as Calculus, Computer Science, and Psychology. Most students who graduate from Point Grey go on to study at colleges or universities.
Where Students Come From
Most students at Point Grey Secondary School come from three elementary schools. These are Kerrisdale Elementary, Quilchena Elementary, and Southlands Elementary.
However, students also come from many other schools. These include Talmud Torah, Emily Carr Elementary, St. Augustine's Elementary, Shaughnessy Elementary, General Wolfe Elementary, L'École Bilingue, and Jules Quesnel Elementary. Students also join from other private and public schools across Vancouver and even from outside the usual school area.
Exploring the School Campus
The main building at Point Grey is the original part of the school. It holds most of the classrooms. On the first floor, you'll find the cafeteria, Foods classrooms, and a Sewing Room.
The second floor has the school office, the Library, and the Auditorium. You'll also find the Band room, a smaller gym, and the main (big) gym here. Many Math, Art, and Tech classes are taught on this floor.
On the third floor, you'll find classes for English, French, Japanese, and Social Studies. There's also a special Science Wing with seven classrooms. In another area called the Breezeway, you can find a Drama room, a Woodworks shop, and more Math, English, and Social Studies classrooms. South of the main gym, there's a tennis court that the school board owns and operates.
Point Grey Mini School
The mini school started in 1979. It's a special program for students from all over the school district. It offers enriched learning and social experiences. This means students get extra challenges and unique activities beyond the regular classes.
To join the mini school, students must take an entrance exam. Only 28 students are chosen each year, usually 14 girls and 14 boys. Even though they are in the mini school, these students are still part of the main school. They take elective and language classes with other students.
The mini school organizes many exciting trips:
- Grade 8: Orientation, a ski trip to Manning Park, and a visit to the Bamfield Marine Station.
- Grade 9 and 10: Orientation, a ski trip to Manning Park, and a trip to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon, USA, or Strathcona Park Lodge.
- Grade 11 and 12: Orientation, and an optional ski trip to Manning Park.
