School History and Growth
The main building of Point Grey Secondary was designed by Fred Townley and Matheson. It was built in 1929 in a style called Collegiate Gothic, which looks a bit like old university buildings. The city of Point Grey (before it joined Vancouver) asked for the school to be built.
It first opened in September 1929 as a junior high school. It stayed a junior high until 1965, when it became a full secondary school for all high school grades. In 1965, the school got a new part with a gym, science labs, and a library.
In 2006, the school worked with the Parks Board to build a new artificial turf sports field. They also upgraded the track around it to a rubber surface. Point Grey also offers special Advanced Placement courses. These courses are like university-level classes in subjects such as Calculus, Computer Science, and Psychology.
Today, Point Grey is a comprehensive secondary school for students in grades 8 to 12. This means it offers a wide range of courses. Most students (about 85%) who graduate from Point Grey go on to study at a college or university.
Where Students Come From
Point Grey Secondary School mostly welcomes students from three elementary schools. These are Kerrisdale Elementary School, Quilchena Elementary School, and Southlands Elementary School.
However, students also come from many other schools. These include Talmud Torah, Emily Carr Elementary School, St. Augustine's Elementary School, Shaughnessy Elementary School, General Wolfe Elementary School, L'École Bilingue, and Jules Quesnel Elementary School. Students also join from other private and public schools, both from the local area and from other parts of Vancouver.
Exploring the School Campus
The main building is the original part of the school. It holds most of the classrooms. On the first floor, you'll find the cafeteria, a Foods room for cooking classes, and a Sewing Room.
The second floor has the main office, the school Library, and the Auditorium. There is also a Band room, a small gym, and the main (big) gym. Most Math, Art, and Tech classes are also on this floor.
On the third floor, you will find classes for English, French, Japanese, and Social Studies. There is also a Science Wing with seven classrooms. A Drama room, a Woodworks shop, and some Math, English, and Social Studies classrooms are located in the Breezeway area. South of the Main Gym, there is a tennis court owned and managed by the school board.
Point Grey Mini School Program
The Mini School program started in 1979. It is a special program for students who want extra learning and social experiences. These are in addition to the regular school subjects.
To join the Mini School, students must take an entrance exam. This is true even if they live in the school's local area. Out of many applicants, only 28 students are chosen each year (14 girls and 14 boys).
Mini School students are still part of the main school. They take elective courses and language classes there. The head teachers for the Mini School are Mr. Paul Skarsgard and Mr. Mori Hamilton.
The students in the Mini School go on several trips:
- *Grade Eight:* They have an Orientation trip, a ski trip to Manning Park, and a visit to the Bamfield Marine Station.
- *Grade Nine and Ten:* These grades have an Orientation trip and a ski trip to Manning Park. They also go to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon, USA, or to Strathcona Park Lodge.
- *Grade Eleven and Twelve:* Students in these grades have an Orientation trip. The Manning Park Ski Trip is optional for them.
