Horkelia marinensis is a special kind of flowering plant in the rose family. It's often called the Point Reyes horkelia. This plant is quite rare and only grows in a specific part of the world: along the coast of California. You can find it from places like Fort Bragg all the way down to near Santa Cruz. It loves sandy spots, like beaches and dunes, where it can spread out.

Discovering the Point Reyes Horkelia

This amazing plant is a perennial herb, which means it lives for more than two years. It grows in low, thick patches close to the ground.

What Does It Look Like?

The leaves of the Point Reyes horkelia can grow up to 10 centimeters (about 4 inches) long. Each leaf is made up of several smaller leaflets. These leaflets are fuzzy, grayish-green, and have tiny teeth along their edges. Each one is about a centimeter (less than half an inch) long. The whole plant feels a bit sticky and has a strong smell because of special glands on its leaves.

How It Grows and Flowers

The Point Reyes horkelia produces stems that can reach up to 30 centimeters (about 12 inches) long. These stems can be green or reddish-green. At the end of these stems, you'll find groups of flowers called inflorescences. The flowers grow in dense clusters.

Each flower has tiny leaf-like parts called bractlets underneath. It also has reddish-green, fuzzy sepals, which are like small leaves that protect the flower bud. The petals are usually white and narrow, with rounded ends. In the very center of the flower, there's a ring of stamens. These are the parts that produce pollen. Inside the ring of stamens, there are about 20 to 30 pistils, which are the parts that will develop into seeds if the flower is pollinated.
