Pokémon X and Y are two exciting role-playing games (RPGs) in the popular Pokémon series. These games were created by Game Freak for the Nintendo 3DS handheld system.
They were first announced by Nintendo on January 8, 2013. Both games were released worldwide on October 12, 2013. Pokémon X and Y were special because they were the very first main Pokémon games to feature full 3D graphics.

Discover New Pokémon and Types
When Pokémon X and Y were announced, many new Pokémon were shown. These included the three starter Pokémon that players could choose at the beginning of their adventure.
Starter Pokémon Choices
- Chespin: A Grass-type Pokémon that looks like a small hedgehog.
- Fennekin: A Fire-type Pokémon that resembles a fox.
- Froakie: A Water-type Pokémon that looks like a frog.
Legendary Pokémon of Kalos
The games also introduced two powerful legendary Pokémon. These special Pokémon are often important to the story.
- Yveltal: A bird-like Pokémon. Its shape looks a bit like the letter Y.
- Xerneas: A deer-like Pokémon. It has X-shapes in its eyes.
Introducing the Fairy-type
Pokémon X and Y brought a brand-new Pokémon type into the game: the Fairy-type. This new type is very strong against Dragon-type Pokémon. Some older Pokémon also became part Fairy-type, like Jigglypuff, Marill, and Gardevoir.
Explore Mega Evolution Power-Ups
A cool new feature in Pokémon X and Y is called Mega Evolution. This allows certain Pokémon to become even stronger during a battle.
How Mega Evolution Works
To use Mega Evolution, a Pokémon needs to hold a special item called a Mega Stone. When activated in battle, the Pokémon changes into a more powerful "Mega" form. This form is much stronger than its normal form.

The Kalos region was heavily inspired by France, with the main city—Lumiose City—being a representation of Paris (pictured). The in-game city is crowned by the Prism Tower, a building inspired by the Eiffel Tower.
