Pokémon: The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon is a special TV episode from the Pokémon anime series. It was made to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Pokémon franchise. This special first aired in the United States on Kids' WB on April 29, 2006. Later, it became available on DVD in the U.S. on September 19, 2006. In Japan, fans could download the special online from October 13 to October 31, 2006. The story in this special takes place during the eighth season of the Pokémon anime, called Pokémon: Advanced Battle.

About the Pokémon Special

This special episode was important because it was the first time a new company handled the English version of the Pokémon anime. Before this, a company called 4Kids Entertainment usually made the English dubs. Now, Pokémon USA (which is now called The Pokémon Company International) and TAJ Productions took over.

New Voices for Pokémon

Because of this change, many of the main Pokémon characters got new voice actors. Some of the original voice actors had been working on the show for eight years! Only a few voice actors stayed. Rodger Parsons continued to be the narrator. Jimmy Zoppi still voiced characters like Gary Oak. Kayzie Rogers voiced many minor characters and Pokémon.

Jimmy Zoppi also started voicing James and Meowth in this special. Kayzie Rogers began voicing Max. She also voiced Ash in the first version of the special. However, Ash's voice was later changed again to Sarah Natochenny.

Fan Reactions and Redubs

Many fans were surprised by the new voices. At an event called San Diego Comic-Con in 2006, it was announced that the DVD version of the special would be better. The dialogue was re-recorded after the new voice actors had more time to get used to their roles. Sarah Natochenny became the new voice for Ash in this improved version. This redubbed version was included as a bonus on the DVD of Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew.
