The Poles River is a river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into Evans Lake. This river is found in the Eeyou Istchee Baie-James area, which is part of Nord-du-Québec.
There are no main roads directly along the Poles River. The closest route from Matagami passes west of Evans Lake. This is about 66.9 kilometres (41.6 mi) (41.6 miles) northwest of where the Poles River enters the lake. The river usually freezes over from early November until mid-May. It is generally safe to travel on the ice from mid-November to mid-April.

Where the Poles River Flows
The Poles River is surrounded by other important waterways. These include:
- To the North: La Marte river and Nemiscau river.
- To the East: Théodat Lake and Tésécau Lake.
- To the South: Le Gardeur Lake, Salamandre River, Broadback River, and Nipukatasi River.
- To the West: Evans Lake, Rabbit Creek, and Chabinoche River.
The River's Beginning
The Poles River starts from an unnamed lake. This lake is about 268 metres (879 ft) (879 feet) above sea level. The source of the river is located:
- 19.4 kilometres (12.1 mi) (12.1 miles) north of where the Poles River ends.
- 34.3 kilometres (21.3 mi) (21.3 miles) north of where Evans Lake flows out.
- 173 kilometres (107 mi) (107 miles) northeast of the town of Matagami.
The River's Journey
The Poles River flows for about 30.3 kilometres (18.8 mi) (18.8 miles). Here's how it travels:
- For 5.4 kilometres (3.4 mi) (3.4 miles), it flows southwest through a marshy area.
- Then, for 13.1 kilometres (8.1 mi) (8.1 miles), it continues southwest through more marshlands.
- Finally, for 11.8 kilometres (7.3 mi) (7.3 miles), it flows west, still passing through marshy areas, until it reaches its mouth.
The Poles River empties into the northeast part of Evans Lake. It faces an island in the lake that is about 1.1 kilometres (0.68 mi) (0.7 miles) long. The Broadback River flows through the northern part of Evans Lake.
Where the River Ends
The mouth of the Poles River is located:
- 16.4 kilometres (10.2 mi) (10.2 miles) northeast of where Evans Lake connects with the Broadback River.
- 156.9 kilometres (97.5 mi) (97.5 miles) north of downtown Matagami.
About the Name
The name "Rivière des Pôles" (which means Poles River in French) became official on December 5, 1968. This was the same day the Commission de toponymie du Québec (Quebec's Place Names Commission) was created.
