Polina Berezina Ksenofontova (born on December 5, 1997) is a talented rhythmic gymnast. She was born in Russia but proudly represents Spain in competitions around the world. Polina has competed in seven Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships. In 2022, she helped the Spanish team win a bronze medal! She is also a five-time champion in Spain, winning the national all-around title in 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, and 2022. At the 2024 Summer Olympics, she finished 15th in the individual all-around competition.

Early Life and Training

Polina Berezina was born in Moscow, Russia. Since 2001, she has lived in Alicante, Spain. When she was 7 years old, Polina started learning rhythmic gymnastics in Guardamar del Segura. A year later, at age 8, she joined a Rhythmic Gymnastics Club in Torrevieja. There, she trained with coach Mónica Ferrández until 2016. In 2008, her father's job meant she lived in Moscow again for a while. During this time, she trained in both Spain with Mónica Ferrández and Russia with Oksana Skaldina.

Becoming a Spanish Gymnast

In 2013, Polina received her Spanish citizenship. This was a big step because it meant she could now compete for the Spanish national team in international events. Her first international competition was the 2013 Gymnasiade, where she won a bronze medal in the hoop final.

Career Highlights

Early International Competitions

Polina started her senior international career by competing in several World Cup events in 2015. She gained experience at competitions in Lisbon, Bucharest, Tashkent, Budapest, and Kazan. In 2015, she made her first appearance at the World Championships. The Spanish team, including Polina, finished 10th that year. She continued to compete in World Cup events in 2016, improving her skills.

2017: First National Title

In 2017, Polina kept competing in World Cup events. She showed good progress, especially at the Portimão World Challenge Cup, where she reached the clubs final and finished seventh. In June, she achieved a major goal: she won her first ever Spanish national all-around title! This made her the top rhythmic gymnast in Spain. She also competed at the World Championships that year.

2018: Defending Her Title

Polina continued to perform well in 2018. She competed in various World Cup events and reached the all-around final at the European Championships, finishing 20th. Later that month, she successfully defended her Spanish national all-around title, proving she was still the best in Spain. She also placed fourth in the all-around final at the Mediterranean Games.

2019: Reaching a World Final

In 2019, Polina competed in more World Cup events. She helped the Spanish team finish 7th at the European Championships. A big moment for her came at the World Championships. She qualified for her first ever World all-around final, finishing 22nd. This was a great achievement, even though Spain didn't earn a spot for the 2020 Olympic Games from this competition.

2020-2021: Pandemic and Olympic Dreams

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Polina's competitions were limited in 2020. However, she still managed to win her third national all-around title in Spain in December. In 2021, she competed in all four World Cup events to try and earn a spot for the Olympic Games. She performed well, even reaching the clubs final in Tashkent. Despite her efforts, she didn't earn enough points to qualify for the Olympics directly.

Polina had one last chance to qualify at the 2021 European Championships. She finished 15th in the all-around, but unfortunately, she didn't get the single Olympic spot available. In July 2021, she won her fourth Spanish all-around title. She then competed at the World Championships.

2022: World Championships Medal

The year 2022 was very successful for Polina. She continued to compete in World Cup events, reaching the ball final in Pesaro and the clubs final in Cluj Napoca. She also defended her Spanish national all-around title again, making it her fifth win! The biggest highlight was at the World Championships. Polina was part of the Spanish team that won a fantastic bronze medal in the team event. This was a huge achievement for her and her country.

2023: First World Cup Medal and Olympic Qualification

In 2023, Polina won her first ever FIG World Cup medal! She earned a bronze medal in the hoop final at the Athens World Cup. She also won a bronze medal with the hoop and a gold medal with the ball at the Thiais Grand Prix. At the European Championships, she finished 8th in the all-around and also reached her first European apparatus final, finishing 8th with the hoop. Later, she placed second at the Spanish Championships. A major achievement came at the 2023 World Championships, where she finished 14th in the all-around and officially qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games!

2024: The Olympic Games

In 2024, Polina prepared for the Olympics by competing in World Challenge Cup events and the European Championships. In August, she proudly represented Spain at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. She finished 15th in the qualification round for the individual all-around competition.
