Polina Berezina Ksenofontova (born December 5, 1997) is a talented rhythmic gymnast from Spain. She was born in Russia but moved to Spain when she was young. Polina has competed in many big events, including seven Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships. In 2022, she helped the Spanish team win a bronze medal at the World Championships. She is also a five-time national champion in Spain, winning the all-around title in 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, and 2022. Polina also competed at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, where she finished 15th in the individual all-around event.
Polina's Early Life
Polina Berezina was born in Moscow, Russia. When she was four years old, in 2001, her family moved to Alicante, Spain. She started rhythmic gymnastics at age 7 in Guardamar del Segura. A year later, at age 8, she joined a Rhythmic Gymnastics Club in Torrevieja. There, she trained with coach Mónica Ferrández for many years. In 2008, her family moved back to Moscow for a short time because of her father's job. During this period, Polina trained in both Spain and Russia.
Polina's Gymnastics Journey
Polina received her Spanish citizenship in 2013. This allowed her to represent Spain in international gymnastics competitions. Her first international event was the 2013 Gymnasiade, where she won a bronze medal in the hoop event.
Starting Her Senior Career (2015-2016)
In 2015, Polina started competing in the senior category. She took part in several World Cup events, traveling to cities like Lisbon, Bucharest, and Tashkent. She made her first appearance at the World Championships in 2015. The Spanish team, including Polina, finished 10th that year. In 2016, she continued to compete in World Cup events, gaining more experience.
Becoming a National Champion (2017-2018)
The year 2017 was a big one for Polina. She competed in more World Cup events and at the European Championships. In June, she won her first ever Spanish national all-around title. This was a huge achievement for her. In 2018, Polina continued to perform well. She competed at the European Championships and finished 20th in the all-around final. She also successfully defended her Spanish national all-around title, winning it for the second time. She placed fourth at the 2018 Mediterranean Games.
World Championships and Olympic Dreams (2019-2021)
In 2019, Polina competed at the European Championships, where the Spanish team finished 7th. She also reached her first individual all-around final at the World Championships, finishing 22nd. This was an important step, but it meant Spain did not get a spot for the 2020 Olympic Games yet.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many competitions were canceled in 2020. Polina still managed to win her third Spanish national all-around title in December. In 2021, she competed in several World Cup events to try and earn a spot for the Olympics. She also competed at the European Championships, but she did not get the Olympic spot. Later in July 2021, Polina won her fourth Spanish all-around title.
Team Bronze and Olympic Qualification (2022-2023)
In 2022, Polina continued to shine. She competed at the European Championships and won her fifth Spanish national all-around title. At the World Championships, she was part of the Spanish team that won a bronze medal. This was a fantastic achievement for the team!
The year 2023 was also very successful. Polina won her first medal at a FIG World Cup event in Athens, earning a bronze medal with the hoop. She also won a bronze with the hoop and a gold with the ball at the Thiais Grand Prix. At the European Championships, she finished 8th in the all-around. Most importantly, at the 2023 World Championships, she finished 14th in the all-around, which earned Spain a spot for the 2024 Olympic Games!
Competing at the Olympics (2024)
In 2024, Polina prepared for the Olympic Games. She competed in World Challenge Cup events and at the European Championships. In August, Polina competed at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. She finished 15th in the qualification round for the individual all-around event.
Polina's Life Outside Gymnastics
As of 2024, Polina Berezina is studying audiovisual communication at the Universidad Católica San Antonio de Murcia in Murcia, Spain. Her dream is to become a film director one day. She is very good at languages and can speak Russian, Spanish, and English fluently. She has an older sister who works in film and music in Moscow.
