Guardamar del Segura, often called just Guardamar, is a lovely town in the Province of Alicante in southern Spain. It sits right where the river Segura meets the Mediterranean Sea. Guardamar is a popular holiday spot, famous for its huge pine forest and 11-kilometer-long white sandy beach.
Long ago, Guardamar was a place where people worked as fishermen and farmers. One of the very first settlements here was a Phoenician colony named Herna. This colony was mentioned by a Roman geographer named Avienius. The name Guardamar might come from the Valencian words guardar (meaning "to keep safe") and mar (meaning "sea"). This makes sense for a town by the sea!
Guardamar is the southernmost town where the Valencian language is spoken. It's special because it's the only town in its region, called Vega Baja del Segura, where Valencian has been traditionally spoken by many people.
The town also celebrates exciting local festivals. These include Moros i Cristians (Moors and Christians), L'Encantà, and Fogueres de Sant Joan (Bonfires of Saint John). These festivals help remember the town's rich history.
