Polly Waffle is a yummy Australian chocolate bar. It's a tube made of crispy waffle, filled with soft, fluffy marshmallow, and covered in delicious compound chocolate. This sweet treat was first made in 1947 by the Hoadley's Chocolate Company.
Over the years, different companies owned Polly Waffle. Rowntree Mackintosh Confectionery took over in 1972. Then, Nestlé bought Rowntree Mackintosh in 1988 and kept making Polly Waffles until 2009. After being off the shelves for a while, an Australian company called Menz Confectionery brought it back in 2024!
History of Polly Waffle
The story of Polly Waffle starts with a man named Abel Hoadley. He opened a jam factory in South Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, in 1889. His business grew quickly, and he started making other foods like sauces and sweets.
By 1901, Hoadley had several factories. He also began making cocoa and chocolate. In 1913, the company officially became "Hoadley's Chocolates Ltd."
The First Polly Waffle
The very first Polly Waffle bar was made in Melbourne in 1947. A person named Mayfield B. Anthony, who worked with the company, came up with the idea for this unique chocolate bar.
Changing Owners
In 1972, a company called Rowntree Mackintosh Confectionery bought Hoadley's Chocolates. The company was then known as "Rowntree Hoadley Ltd." Later, in 1988, a big global company called Nestlé bought Rowntree. Nestlé continued to produce many of the popular chocolate brands, including Polly Waffle.
During the 1970s, Polly Waffle had a catchy advertising slogan: "mmm, crunch, aah!"
Discontinuation and Return
In 2009, Nestlé changed the recipe for Polly Waffle. They also updated the packaging. However, on November 23, 2009, Nestlé stopped making Polly Waffle. They said it was because not enough people were buying it. This made many fans sad!
After Polly Waffle was discontinued, some people really missed it. In 2015, a company in Melbourne called Chocolate Works made a similar product called "The Great Aussie Waffle Log." They did this because many people on social media wanted the classic bar to come back.
Then, in 2019, there was exciting news! An Adelaide-based sweet maker, Robern Menz (now Menz Confectionery), signed a deal with Nestlé. Menz Confectionery decided to bring Polly Waffle back to stores. They had also bought the rights to another classic Australian treat, the Violet Crumble, from Nestlé a year earlier.
The company first said Polly Waffle would be back in 2022. However, the date was pushed back to 2024. Finally, in April 2024, Polly Waffle returned! It came back as "Polly Waffle Bites," which are small, bite-sized versions of the classic bar.
