An amazing aerial view of Ponce Inlet, Florida.

The Ponce de Leon Inlet is a natural opening in the barrier islands of central Florida. It acts like a special gateway. This gateway connects the northern part of the Mosquito Lagoon and the southern part of the Halifax River to the huge Atlantic Ocean. It's a very important waterway for boats and wildlife!

What's in a Name?

The Ponce de Leon Inlet wasn't always called that. It was first known as Mosquito Inlet. But in 1926, the Florida Legislature decided to change its name. They renamed it after Juan Ponce de León, a famous Spanish explorer.

Why Did the Name Change?

There was a good reason for the name change. Other places nearby had already changed their names. For example, Mosquito County had become Orange County. Also, the Mosquito River was renamed the Halifax River. So, only the Mosquito Lagoon kept its original name. Changing the inlet's name made it fit better with the new names of the surrounding areas.

What You Can Find There

The Ponce de Leon Inlet is home to the town of Ponce Inlet, Florida. This town is a popular spot for visitors and locals. You can also find the famous Ponce de Leon Inlet Light nearby. This tall lighthouse helps guide ships safely.

Who Takes Care of the Inlet?

Keeping the inlet open and safe is a big job! The Ponce de Leon Inlet & Port District manages it. This group is part of the Volusia County, Florida government. They work hard to make sure the inlet stays clear for boats and protects the environment.
